Marvel Studios Reveals Phase 3 Movie Line-Up

All the Groundbreaking News from Marvel's October 28th Event:

Marvel Studios went REALLY BIG today with a huge announcement of every movie slated for the MCU through 2019.



Captain America 3 will be released May 6, 2016. The crowd was faked out at first by a false subtitle: Serpent Society. Beware! Some websites are still reporting this as the official subtitle. Rest assured, the real subtitle is Civil War. Later in the press Q & A, Kevin Feige elaborated on what Civil War will be for the MCU. 

"Civil War [is the] Civil War of the cinematic universe, which will be greatly inspired by the Civil War of the comic universe, but we have very different continuity there... This will be the Civil War based off of all the other films that you’ve seen up to this point, particularly Winter Soldier and particularly Age of Ultron.”

For those wondering how the Civil War story line is going to work in the MCU with so many missing factors from the comics, Feige gave us a vague idea:

"I don’t want to give too much away, but needless to say, the generalities of the act are the same. Something happens, perhaps it’s cumulative for things that have happened though all of the movies leading up to this point. It has made the governments of the world say 'we need to have some oversight of these guys. They need to report to somebody.' So it becomes more… it falls under that umbrella, rather than 'you have to take off your mask.' It’s not about the secret identity thing, as much as it is about, overall, who reports to who, and who can agree to oversight committee. Because as of now, in Avengers 2, there is no more security council, there is no SHIELD, obviously. Stark is paying for it, Captain America is running it, and things occur that will make governments begin to question."

November 4, 2016 will be Doctor Strange. Scott Derrickson will be directing. No casting announcements about Dr. Strange today surprisingly. Feige later says that casting has not been confirmed or they would have announced it today.



May 5, 2017...the untitled Guardians of the Galaxy sequel! Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot more to report on this one except that the studio has moved the date up a couple of months from the previously announced date of July 28, 2017.

November 3, 2017...Black Panther! CROWD GOES CRAZY, Chadwick Boseman announced as Black Panther.



July 6, 2018...CAPTAIN MARVEL! This is pretty exciting news. Feige confirmed that this Captain Marvel will be Carol Danvers. Carol Corps rejoice!

There was MUCH speculation that Marvel would make an announcement concerning Spidey's movie rights. But, alas, there was no such luck this time around. The only response Feige gave to all the rumors was pretty much a non-answer:

“Anything that wasn’t specifically and obviously revealed today is either not true at all, or still rumor until it’s worked out,”

In fact, for as much great news as we got, there were quite a few missing pieces. We didn't get any confirmation on the casting of Dr. Strange and there was zero new info on Ant-Man either. As for all the open space in 2019 (and beyond) Feige had this to say:

“If there are more years after 2019, there are more movies after 2019,”

Starburn #1 - Indie Comic Book Review

Starburn is an Action-Packed Romp Through Outer Space... with Pirates!

Starburn, written by Kelly Bender with illustrations by Brian Balondo, is an excellent first outing for this new series from Markosia. Captain Aphi and his crew, containing a blend of human looking and alien members, are space pirates. The premise for the book isn't wildly original but it's very well done. The pacing of the book is just right, giving us enough exposure to get to know the crew, but not beating us over the head with it either. On top that, all the characters emote and interact in ways that we get a feel for their personalities and the dynamic between the crew pretty quickly as well. To give you a brief idea of the plot without spoiling anything, our crew finds themselves on a very lucrative mission with unknown cargo to retrieve. Their client has offered to pay them three times the going rate, so you know something's up. On arrival, the Starburn crew quickly learn they are transporting a person and not a thing. And then the going gets rough. I'll leave it there so we stay out of spoiler territory.

The art of Starburn is quite good. The illustrations of Balondo with the inks of Cristian Docolomansky are crisp and consistent. The color work of Laura Lee helps elevate the book to the pro level. So many of the indie sci-fi books I've read lately seem to get stalled in the black and white or grey scale mode. While I can appreciate a comic that's in black and white, it's definitely more enticing to read a full color book created by talented people. Even the lettering by Nic J Shaw is done well and feels progressive, opting for a bubble/tail style that I've only seen from VC's Clayton Cowles.

Overall, this book feels like it has a story with legs and art that is up to snuff. Starburn is slated for a release in early 2015, so stay tuned to Markosia for an official announcement on the publish date. Markosia books now featured prominently on iTunes, iBooks, Comics + and DriveThruComics, and will be featuring on many other platforms over the next year, so watch this space for more announcements.

Hendo corporation has launched a Kickstarter campaign for an actual, working Hoverboard. This is real people!

So where does the HENDO hoverboard stand today? Well, about 1 inch off the ground. As you can see from the video above, the prototype is real and it works! But to see it hover in person, and better yet, to defy gravity by riding it, is something you need to experience as well.

With the support of the Kickstarter community, we all can. We need your help to put the finishing touches on the Hendo Hoverboard, to help us produce them, and to create places to ride them.

Looks like if everything goes to plan, we'll have that hoverboard just in time for the date that Marty McFly travels to in Back to the Future II.



As you may have seen, there are redundant hoaxes that have occured on social media, touting "this day" (whatever the day was at the time) as the date that Marty McFly travels to in the future. But, we still aren't there yet. The actual date is one year from today. And it looks like Hendo is in the business of making dreams come true. I doubt they will have any trouble getting funding for a project like this.

Apparently, there are some pretty serious limitations to the Hendo Hoverboard. The original design was meant to help save buildings from earthquakes. If you consider how that technology works, then you can imagine how limited this version of our coveted hoverboard will be. That being said, in the hands of some of the skateboarding and snowboarding greats, who knows what they might be able to pull off!

Luckily, with the future just around the corner, our fashion sense is MUCH better than they were expecting in that 80's influenced flick.

Gorillaz 2016 Speculation Flying on Internet Hype

Gorillaz 2016 Release in the Works?

The Internet is absolutely buzzing with speculation about a Gorillaz 2016 release. All citing a singular article from The Sydney Morning Herald, music and news sites including Billboard.com, RollingStone.com, and SPIN are reporting that Damon Albarn is confirming a new Gorillaz album for 2016. Unfortunately, the article in question doesn't actually have any quotes from Albarn about a forthcoming Gorillaz 2016 release. The article simple offers the information without context or follow-up. There's a lot of focus on the "reactivating" part of the news, but that's  simply because there is no other information to go off right now.

A serial collaborator who has released a dozen albums since Blur's last album, Think Tank, in 2003, Albarn is currently writing a West End theatre musical adaptation of a children's book, is in the process of reactivating Gorillaz for a 2016 release and is trying to find time to record a new The Good, the Bad & The Queen album, which he says is fully written.

In April 2014, NME ran an article quoting Albarn

I could put a Gorillaz record out next week; I've got enough stuff I haven't finished.

This news may not have come as a huge surprise to fans of Albarn. The musician is wildly prolific, producing projects ranging in scope from pop records to operas and musicals. Just in the realm of pop and rock music, Albarn is involved with numerous different bands including Blur, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Rocket Juice & the Moon on top of his own solo endeavors. Anyone who has followed Albarn's discography could probably guess that another Gorillaz' release would most likely occur. The main barrier to that happening was a rather public split between Albarn and co-founder and animator, Jamie Hewlett. The exciting news from the NME article was that apparently Hewlett and Albarn have reconciled:

There are points in every relationship where they fall out with people that they're close to and then theyreconcile, hopefully, and actually, you know the relationship's probably in a healthier place as a result of that,

While I'll be eagerly awaiting more details, but just the possibility of a new Gorillaz album in the works is exciting news.

Warner Bros. Reveals Full DC Comic Film Slate

Warner Bros. Reveals Plans To Make DC Cinematic Universe a Reality

UPDATE: A recent tweet from Time Warner indicates there will also be more solo movies for Batman and Superman that have yet to be announced.  See the tweet below:

Earlier today in a Warner Brothers stockholders' meeting, chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara revealed the full line-up of DC movies coming through 2020. You can read the full report by David Lieberman at Deadline.com.



As you can read below in the official line-up, some other big news is the casting for The Flash.  Ezra Miller will take on the role of the "fastest man alive" in a solo movie coming 2018. Also, we have our first official confirmation that Jason Momoa is Aquaman. Really there are more than a couple of hardly-kept-secrets in this announcement that are getting confirmed for the first time by WB. What are your thoughts on the new official line-up?

Marvel's Civil War Coming to the Big Screen

Variety.com Reports Robert Downey Jr. In Talks to Join Cast of Captain America 3, Kick Off Civil War

In an earlier post today, we reported that Marvel would be reviving the Civil War crossover mega-event in new comic books for Summer 2015. Now in an even bigger development, Variety.com is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is in the final negotiating stages to join the cast of Captain America 3. The key quote from the article reads:

Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of signing on to “Captain America 3,” a move that would bring the Civil War storyline from Marvel’s comicbooks to the bigscreen and trigger the start of a new phase of movies from Marvel Studios.

While there have been lots of rumors flying about a possible Civil War based movie hitting the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future, there was much resistance to the idea from fans. The main problem being movie rights of certain characters in the Civil War story line, namely Spider-Man, are not owned by Marvel Studios. There have also been the normal bi-annual rumors of Sony being in talks to let Marvel use Spider-Man in the MCU just last week. Is this just a coincidence? Or is it all connected?

Either way, it seems that Marvel is set to ret-con the Civil War event so that Spider-Man may not be necessary. While that seems like a possibility, it's confusing that the promotional art for new Civil War comics prominently feature Spider-Man in his Iron Spider costume.

The Russo brothers and Robert Downey, Jr. have been teasing that big news would be coming sooner than later about Captain America and the future of Iron Man respectively. Man, they weren't kidding! This is pretty huge. What do you think this breaking development forebodes for the MCU?

Civil War Announced by Marvel for Summer 2015

Civil War Again for the Heroes of Marvel Comics?

According to a new article from ComicBookResources.com, Marvel has teased a return to the popular Civil War story line. There are literally no other details than this image of Iron Man and Captain America playing tug-of-war with Spider-Man in his Iron Spider costume. The image was rendered by Adi Granov with the familiar cover treatment from the original 2006-2007 crossover event. The event was widely popular, even spawning a variation of the story for the multi-player, button-masher video game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. There has been wild and unfounded speculation that Civil War might be the foundation of a future Avengers movie. But as many of us know, this would be a very different version of Civil War with so many of Marvel's movie rights held by other studios.

Marvel Reveals Daredevil Concept Art

Joe Quesada's Daredevil Concept Art Revealed

Marvel's presence at New York Comic Con this year includes a panel for the new Netflix show "Marvel's Daredevil." The cast and show runner will be making their first public appearance at New York Comic Con later today. With little more than an hour to go, Marvel has unveiled Joe Quesada's Daredevil concept art for the show. Earlier today Netflix posted the first official webpage for the show featuring a brief synopsis. Go check it out here. What do you guys think of our first look?



 

"Marvel's Daredevil" is just the first of 5 superhero focused series coming to Netflix in 2015. Along with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron First, Daredevil will team up to create The Defenders. With each hero first getting their own series, the four characters will join forces for a mini-series aptly named The Defenders. There hasn't been much news for any of the other characters slated to come to Netflix next year, but there has been lots of chatter and rumors flying about who will be cast in these superhero roles.  Matt Murdoch has already been cast for Daredevil by Charlie Cox  with a supporting cast of Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Rosario Dawson in an undisclosed role. Along with Showrunner Steve S. DeKnight the cast will be making a presentation at New York Comic Con today to shed some more light on the show.

Like Father, Like Daughter - Indie Comic Preview

Like Father, Like Daughter: Short Fuse Media and Comic Uno Kickstart Their First Published Comic Book

OK, this is our first comic PREVIEW, and while we don't know a lot about the project, I still felt compelled to share it. I'm excited enough about what Like Father, Like Daughter is doing with Short Fuse Media that I wanted to put the word out about their Kickstarter to fund their first published comic book. I'll do my best to give you some details, but to hear it told best, watch the video from their Kickstarter below.



Full transparency here, I was turned on to Short Fuse Media because I was hired to do some writing and lettering work for a forthcoming project. I was enthralled and excited by the story that I was brought on to help tell and thus I became immediately interested in whatever else they had in the works. That is how I discovered Like Father, Like Daughter. I have no part in this project but I am equally excited about the project for two reasons. One, this will be the first published book from Short Fuse Media, and as one of my favorite unattributed quotes goes, "Comic books are like boobs. They look fine on a computer, but I'd rather hold one in my hand." (No, it wasn't Stan Lee as the Internet may have led you to believe). Two, Short Fuse Media is also giving a young creator the chance to make her comic book a reality. I think this is just plain awesome. I wish that every young creator with a story to tell could have a chance like this.

Like Father, Like Daughter is a story of a girl whose father abandons her to become the world's first superhero. This premise really intrigues me because it's a superhero story with a real world twist. We always think of superheroes as good guys when they are saving the day, but we rarely see a superhero with a family, much less the fallout that superhero status can cause for their families. Just think about the hypocrisy at play here.  A superhero who saves the world on the reg, but leaves his daughter to be raised without a father. It's a pretty heavy premise, and as far as I can tell, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Kat aka Comics Uno (also a comic book reviewer with her own YouTube show) teases that there are many twists and turns to come, but we'll just have to wait and see...

I urge everyone to consider backing this Kickstarter project because the comic is based on an idea I believe in, which is stories that can help uplift young people. Not only is the publishing of this story going to help Kat make her dream of becoming a published comic book creator, but the story itself will inspire many young people who may be in the same situation. It's rare to see a story of this nature in a superhero comic book, and I think that's a shame. In the past four years that I have grown within the comic book industry, I have met many creators who truly inspire me because of why they want to make comics. They want to tell stories that aren't being told. So many great indie creators are still on the underground level, and I really hope that in the years to come, we can help build up storytellers who have a message that can truly help people in the world. Cyclops #1 Preview

Scott Summers Gets a Do-Over on Life With Cyclops #1

Cyclops #1 is going to be an exciting bit of nostalgia mixed with an epic space opera. With this comic coming out in just a few days, I thought it would be nice to do a sort of Cyclops #1 Preview, if you will. This preview is very unofficial, but it should help you to get an idea of what to expect.



It is important to note here that if you haven't been reading comics in the ALL-NEW Marvel Now! phase, you might find Scott Summer's first solo outing a bit confusing. To get you caught up, the newest and youngest version of Cyclops was brought by Hank McCoy to the future. Beast's intentions were to show Scott Summers what he used to be with the hope that it would change the present day man back into a better person. But then things got sticky. Once the original X-men tried to return to their own timeline, for some unexplained reason, they couldn't and they were stuck in the present. (See All-New X-men to get really caught up on what's going on here.) Then things got extra-planetary.

There is a lot more to read about in The Trial of Jean Grey, but to get to the point, young Scott Summers meets his Space Pirate father and decides to adventure across the galaxy with him.  Leaving his one true love and his original X-men buddies behind, Cyclops is off to travel the stars.



I think this ongoing series has a lot of potential, especially when you weigh the young Scott Summers against his present day counterpart. While I will wholly admit that I actually like the revolutionary Cyclops a lot better than the goody-goody righteous leader that he has always played, there is just a lot of baggage on Cyclops right now. The Phoenix force came and took over his body and as a result, (spoiler alert) Scott ended up slaying Charles Xavier in cold blood. Now that the events of A vs. X are over, Cyclops has been a very heavy character to follow, and it's not without it's rewards. I love his new costume, his new crew, and his new attitude, but after a while, I start to wonder where its all leading to? With Bendis at the helm, I know that Uncanny X-men (the book with the central role surrounding Scott Summers and his team of X-defectors) has a good chance of staying excellent. But with Cyclops on-going series, we get a bit of relief from the darkness that Uncanny X-men just can't achieve. At least not for some time.

I am looking forward to an era where the X-men team will be whole again. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. Marvel and its writers seem to have more fun destroying characters, teams, hell even entire universes right now than they want to re-establish the status quo. I, for one, look forward to Cyclops being a nice book to find some comic relief and possibly more light-hearted story lines. The father-son dynamic is sure to be filled with strife as well as heart-warming moments. Plus, setting the whole run in outer space opens the dynamics of this story up to unlimited possibilities.

In the very short preview that I have seen, the writing of Greg Rucka is quick and funny. We get enough exposure into the life of Cyclops without bogging the development of the story arc in redundancy. The art is beautiful. Russell Dauterman brings the youth and excitement of this Cyclops directly to the page. There is still much to be seen as far as what type of alien characters we will run into, but so far Dauterman brings the depths of space to life brilliantly with the help of colors by Chris Sotomayor.
