Magilicutty - Indie Comic Book Review

Magilicutty Makes Dirty Work Look Like Good, Clean Fun

Magilicutty is the brainchild of Sam Bruch. He first wrote the story as a screenplay and then brought it to life in comic book form via a modest Kickstarter. Sam was only looking for $550 to get Magilicutty published. In the end, he finished the Kickstarter with $1511 and funded three more stretch goals. This is really impressive. I think it says a lot to set a humble goal, and then blow it out of the water.

Ok, now on to the review. I think that Sam's concept here really has some legs. I'm really not in love with the art of Brian Becknell, so rather than nitpick at the art here, I'm going to focus on the story. It's the future, and it would seem that heroes and villains run rampant. Our main character, Frank Magilicutty, works as a henchmen, or "henching" as he calls it. There is even an agency that prospective freelancers can call to look for work as a henchman. There's a lot of action in this book right out of gate. I think for a new comic book, this was a great decision. Hit us with what we want: ACTION.  The fight scenes are rather gory. I don't think that you would want anyone under the age of 13 reading this book. Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned. But with that being said, there is some serious impalement, dismemberment and profuse blood going on here. I don't want to give away the story, but the important bit is that Frank loses his job. Apparently, this is the latest in a run of terminations. Frank is on thin ice with his wife. If things don't pick up, Frank will have to work at his father-in-law's lamp factory. The major source of conflict here is that Frank's wife doesn't know that he's been "henching" all this time to bring home the bacon. I'll leave it there and urge you to go pick up a copy at http://www.indyplanet.com/front/product/108991/

Additionally, Magilicutty #2 was funded through Kickstarter and will be out on October 20th.
